The UK Chamber of Shipping, The International Bunkering Industry Association and Shell will be presenting the Alternative Fuels in the Maritime Industry Virtual Round Table on Thursday 21st January from 10am - 11:30am.

The event will look at a variety of fuels which one may not think of directly when thinking about marine fuel oil. Shell will delve deeper into their journey on the energy transition pathway and shed light on alternative fuels to use in the shipping industry. After the presentation, we will have a virtual round table with Shell (Marcel van den Berg – Business Development Manager GTL Fuel), IBIA (Unni Einemo – Director and IMO Representative) and DNV GL (Christos Chryssakis – Business Development Manager Maritime) to discuss the place these fuels have in the shipping industries journey to using cleaner fuels.

If you have any queries or issues, please contact Priya Birk.

Marcel van den Berg, Business Development Manager GTL Fuel, Shell

Marcel van den Berg is the Business Development Manager for Shell Gas To Liquid Fuel in the Benelux. Marcel has been working for Shell for more than thirty years and has been active in numerous logistical- and sales roles.

In 2012 , Shell GTL Fuel was introduced in The Netherlands for B2B-customers and from the start, Marcel was involved in the introduction processes and sharing these practices with internal and external stakeholders.

Shell GTL Fuel Marine is a synthetic diesel, suitable for all diesel engines without any adaptions and immediately resulting in reduction of local emissions: Sox , NOx, PM, smell  and sound. Shell GTL Fuel Marine could therefore help reducing local emissions for sea going vessels, especially in ports.

Unni Einemo, Director and IMO Representative, IBIA

Unni Einemo joined the IBIA secretariat in April 2016 as its IMO Representative, Media and Communications Manager after two years as a non-Executive board director. She was promoted to Director in order to serve as the global head of the Association in September 2018 following a unanimous decision by the board of IBIA.

Prior to joining IBIA, she worked for two decades as a journalist and analyst in the marine fuel and shipping industries in her capacity as Managing Editor for the highly regarded Bunkerworld and Sustainable Shipping specialist news services at Petromedia, and later Platts, which acquired Petromedia in July 2015. She has gained expert knowledge through engaging with industry, attending numerous maritime and energy conferences, and regularly attending IMO meetings, and has herself become a sought-after speaker at industry events. In 2018, she was named among the “Top 10 in regulation” in the Lloyd’s List annual most influential people in shipping series.

Christos Chryssakis, Business Development Manager Maritime, DNV GL

Christos Chryssakis is a Business Development Manager at DNV GL – Maritime, focusing on decarbonization and marine fuels. In the past, he has worked at DNV GL Group Technology & Research focusing on energy efficiency and fuels. Before joining DNV GL he worked as a researcher at the National Technical University of Athens, and at the Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP), in Paris, France. He has more than 10 years of R&D experience in internal combustion engines for marine, automotive and off-road applications, with particular focus on emissions reduction. He has a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and a MSc and PhD degree from the University of Michigan.
