The fifth in the UK Chamber of Shipping's webinar programme will take place on 4th August and is titled Arbitration: principles and practicalities. Donald Chard, Maritime Arbitrator will present this session.

Donald will be giving a brief, but informative, background insight into Arbitation:

(i) Arbitration as an alternative form of dispute resolution;

(ii) Reasons for using arbitration: neutrality, confidentiality, party autonomy, flexibility, finality and enforceability;

(iii) Contractual Arbitration Clauses; 

(iv) Maritime Arbitration in London:

     (a) the legislative background under the Arbitration Act 1996;

     (b) the London Maritime Arbitrators' Association; and

     (c) a brief summary of procedures from dispute to award     

Donald Chard FICS FCIArb

Donald Chard is a Chartered Shipbroker and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

During a career of more than thirty-eight years at the UK Chamber of Shipping, and as Head of Legal & Documentary from 1994, he specialised in documentary issues. He was active on BIMCO Sub-committees and Working Groups developing charter parties, clauses and specialist maritime contracts. On retiring from the Chamber of Shipping, he became a Consultant to BIMCO, continuing to work on contractual issues, until the end of 2019.

He has been an Arbitrator since 2012 and is an Aspiring Full Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators’ Association. He has acted as sole arbitrator and panel member in a variety of references and particularly in voyage and time charter party disputes.
