In this seminar on Employment Law challenges for the maritime industry hosted jointly by Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) and the UK Chamber of Shipping (UKCoS), we will be looking at a wide variety of topics relevant to employment in the maritime sector.
Part 1 – Sailing into Jurisdiction: Partner Devan Khagram of WFW will consider the complicated issue of jurisdiction in the context of seafarers. David Reade QC of Littleton Chambers will look at the territorial reach of UK legislation for seafarers both off-shore, including its application to non-UK flagged ships and on-shore, including recruiting in the UK – the implications of the case of Walker v Wallem.
Part 2 – UK Immigration for Seafarers: Immigration Adviser Elliott Marsh of WFW will provide an overview of UK immigration for seafarers and key issues and challenges for immigration and seafarers
Part 3 – Changes to the MLC: The event will conclude with the Chamber’s Policy Director Tim Springett and Policy Advisor Hannah Gilbert explaining the effects of the amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 agreed by the ILO Special Tripartite Committee in May 2022.
