Bulletin: Merchant Navy Medal

With lockdown in full swing much of my focus this week has been on working with the cruise sector to look at ways we can get the industry back up and running. Working with our partners at the Cruise Lines International Association we have put together a new secretariat to focus the work of the industry and in the coming weeks we have a range of meetings with officials and ministers across government. We will continue to work tirelessly for our members and the whole UK cruise sector which is a vital part of our economy.

Next week sees the start of a major global environmental meeting at the International Maritime Organisation. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) will be holding a week long session where the future of global shipping environmental regulations will be discussed. Due to Covid the meeting will be held remotely but the team at the Chamber will be monitoring the discussions closely.

Yesterday the Department for Transport announced the 20 individuals who have this year received the Merchant Navy Medal. I was delighted to see former Chamber CEO, and current ICS Secretary-General Guy Platten amongst the recipients along with Neil Atkinson and Stephen Watkins for their role in training the next generation of seafarers. Congratulations to all of those who have received this prestigious award.

Our online events programme has continued apace this week with an excellent trade event on Tuesday and the annual British Tugowners Association safety conference on Wednesday. Both were extremely well attended and shows the continuing appetite for a range of online events.

On 20 November we have our next CEO seminar which will discuss the virtual working environment, how this has changed management practices over the last few months and how it is likely to impact our industry in the future.  We are delighted that our President, John Denholm will chair the online event and if you are a CEO / MD and want to join you can book your ticket here.

Finally, on 26 November we will be running our Understanding UK Shipping course - a great event for newcomers to the industry or anyone wanting a refresh.
