Bulletin: Net Zero Strategy

Bulletin: Net Zero Strategy

Net Zero Strategy

The government this week published its long-awaited Net Zero Strategy. With COP26 starting in just over a week this strategy has, for the first time, demonstrated how we as a nation can reach net zero by 2050.

For the shipping and maritime sector the strategy states that the government will “build on our strong maritime heritage and the success of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition to deliver a more ambitious multiyear programme for the sector." The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition has been a real success and during LISW the government announced the winners of the first competition. A range of Chamber members including CALMAC, P&O, Carnival, Bibby, LR, Shell, and Schneider, amongst others, were all granted funding for a range of projects.

We are pleased the government has committed to the scheme going forwards and we hope to see more detail on how this will be financed during the Budget next week.

Next Wednesday our Policy Director Anna Ziou will be giving evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee’s Net zero aviation and shipping enquiry. It is testament to the knowledge and expertise of the team at the Chamber that we are sought out for these enquiries. You can watch the session at Parliament’s broadcasting site where it will be shown live from 2pm.

Annual Dinner

I am delighted to announce that the Chamber’s prestigious Annual Dinner will take place on 7th February 2022 at a brand new venue, the JW Marriott Grosvenor House on Park Lane. More details on how to book tickets and tables and sponsorship opportunities will be sent out early next week.

Events

Next Monday a Future of Green Shipping event is being hosted by the British-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association. The UK Shipping Minister Robert Courts will deliver the keynote address at the event being hosted online and in person in Oslo. This event will also examine plans, innovations and incentives for reducing emissions from the shipping industry and avenues of cooperation and collaboration between the two countries, as well as insight to current and future legislation changes that affect the shipowners looking to work with the UK.

All Chamber members are welcome to sign up for the live-stream of this seminar. You can register for the event here with the online streaming starting at 1600 BST.

The team at the Chamber will be putting on the next Understanding UK Shipping Course which will take place on 9th November. The full day event will give participants an understanding of how the UK shipping industry operates, the regulations, constraints and current issues. Members and non-members can book their place now.

And finally, earlier this week we launched our new look Daily Briefing email which goes out every morning and gives a round-up of the most important shipping, maritime and business news straight to your inbox. If you haven’t already signed up you can do so now.
