City of Glasgow College gains training recognition
The Merchant Navy Training Board has awarded City of Glasgow College course recognition for their online course to raise awareness about oxygen depletion in enclosed spaces.
The Centre and Course Recognition accolades were developed in 2018 by the MNTB to provide an independent assessment of maritime training around the world.
Kathryn Neilson, Director of the MNTB:
“Any enclosed space has the potential to be dangerous due to a build-up of invisible, odourless, hazardous gasses and low oxygen levels as a result of a concentration of CO & CO2 gases. In our industry, we are still seeing far too many fatal accidents occurring due to crew not being trained effectively in the use of personal protective equipment and safety procedures associated with enclosed spaces. What this course does is to raise awareness of the dangers and fatal consequences of not taking the right precautions when entering an enclosed space.”
Linus Reichenbach, Project Manager (STEM and Innovation) at City of Glasgow College said:
"The free online course City of Glasgow College has developed aims to raise awareness of the dangers of entering enclosed spaces. The programme follows on from research which the college carried out, in partnership with maritime industry specialists and shipping companies, to determine the rate of oxygen depletion in confined spaces in ships at sea.
“We want seafarers, regardless of the vessel type they work on, to understand that a situation which might look safe, may not be. It has been great to have the support of MNTB throughout our development and to now be officially recognised by them."
The Entering Enclosed Spaces Aboard Ships Safety Awareness online course is accessible to all those who would like to develop their awareness of the dangers involved with enclosed spaces and was awarded Course Recognition for achieving a detailed series of excellent practice criteria set by the MNTB. The free 90-minute online course also highlights the importance of remote learning material which is invaluable to extend how candidates learn and enables them to have a reference source available to refresh knowledge.
The Merchant Navy Training Board Course Recognition scheme provides independent verification for ‘gold standard’ training centres, whilst also serving as a valuable quality improvement process in its own right. The scheme is ISO9001 accredited and has the full involvement and support of the UK Chamber of Shipping, the trade association for the UK shipping industry.
