Government launches UK SHORE

The UK Chamber of Shipping reacts to the launch of UK SHORE.

UK SHORE will tackle shipping emissions and advance the UK towards a sustainable shipping future. They have also committed £206 million of new funding to accelerate research into the development of clean maritime technologies and create skilled jobs across the country.

Reacting to the news, UK Chamber of Shipping Director of Policy Peter Aylott said:

“Decarbonising the shipping industry is a huge challenge and the decision by the government to invest more than £200m in the new UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions is an important step in helping the industry on its journey to net zero. We have long called for serious investment from the government to help reduce shipping’s emissions and we are pleased they have listened to us. But we know there is more to do and a long way to go. The government will need to continue increasing investment and support for shipping if we are to catch up with the other leading maritime nations.

“As the Chamber and its members would like to do more to help in this transition, we are looking forward to hearing further details how UK-SHORE will deliver the second round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, ensuring that sufficient time is provided to the industry to come forward with the right proposals and collaborations to maximise the programme's success."

The Prime Minister visited a Merseyside dockyard to announce a £4 billion injection into the UK’s regional shipbuilding industry to create tens of thousands of high-quality jobs.

Peter Aylott said:

“We are also pleased to see the government announce a £4 billion injection into regional shipbuilding. As a maritime nation we have a long and proud shipping history and this new commitment from the government will see new high skilled jobs created in often forgotten about coastal communities.”
